When people work together, neighborhoods grow stronger.
That belief was reaffirmed this week as The Lydia House Community Outreach received approval for a $2,500 community grant following a presentation to the District 6 Advisory Council, representing the Shelby Park and Meriwether-Fort Hill neighborhoods.
This moment wasn’t simply about funding.
It was the result of months of relationship-building, listening, serving, and showing our neighbors, and Louisville Metro Government, that community transformation begins with people.
Service Before Funding
Earlier this summer, members of the Metro Council visited our June Neighborhood Block Party, where they met volunteers, families, community partners, and residents from throughout the neighborhood.
Rather than hearing about our work through a report or presentation, they experienced it firsthand.
They saw neighbors connecting.
They saw volunteers serving.
They saw children playing safely.
They saw businesses, churches, nonprofits, and residents standing together.
Most importantly, they saw what happens when a neighborhood chooses hope over isolation.
Those conversations naturally led to an invitation for Lydia House representatives to attend the District 6 Advisory Council meeting.
Sharing the Lydia House Story
Rev. George Mayes and Deacon Ed Maxwell from The Lydia House Community Outreach were invited to speak with members of the Advisory Council about the organization’s mission and the work taking place throughout the community.
Council members asked thoughtful questions about our programs, our impact, and the families we serve.
Many expressed surprise at the breadth of services already being provided.
From neighborhood outreach and community events to connecting families with essential resources, Lydia House has quietly become a place where compassion turns into action.
When the Council asked what level of support would make the greatest immediate impact, a request of $2,500 was presented.
Following discussion, the Advisory Council voted unanimously to recommend the funding.
For our organization, that unanimous vote represented more than financial support.
It represented trust.
A Shared Vision for District 6
Under the leadership of Metro Council District 6 Representative JP Lyninger, District 6 has emphasized neighborhood participation through its Advisory Council, giving residents and community organizations a direct voice in identifying local priorities and investing discretionary funds. The Council meets regularly to review community proposals, discuss neighborhood needs, and recommend funding for projects that strengthen District 6.
That community-centered approach aligns closely with the work happening every week at The Lydia House Community Outreach.
Both organizations recognize that meaningful change happens through collaboration.
Recent District 6 investments have supported youth programs, neighborhood initiatives, community resources, and resident-driven projects throughout Louisville, reflecting a broader commitment to strengthening neighborhoods from the ground up.
We are honored to become part of that ongoing effort.

As part of this partnership, members of the Advisory Council are expected to visit The Lydia House Community Outreach to learn even more about our programs and see our work in action.
We also look forward to working with Nick Conder, Legislative Assistant for District 6, as we complete the grant process and continue building relationships that benefit our entire community.
Community partnerships like these help ensure that public resources are invested where they can create lasting impact.
